06-08-2026 - 5:05 AM - Good Morning! It’s Monday, and our lake levels have definitely improved following the recent storms. Don't forget that our three Walmart stores provide entertaining scanner radio fodder. Listen on 154.570 and 154.600 MHz. As I mentioned earlier, the construction of our “northside” data center should provide more interesting scanning opportunities. But first, you need a scanner radio! Meanwhile, I have Morse code on the 40-meter band running in the background, and my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 2:20 PM - A few years ago, a local CB Radio Operator was pulling his hair out over an SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) reading of 1.4:1. He was discussing the situation with an operator across town. No matter how much he shortened, lengthened, or mutilated his antenna, he couldn’t get the SWR lower. Finally, perhaps with the assistance of gremlins, he managed to get it down to 1.3:1. He asked the other operator if he could detect any difference in his signal. Not surprisingly, the other operator said he could not. It was interesting that he was freaking out over a reading of 1.4:1. What was more interesting was the idea that a station across town could tell the difference between the two SWR readings. The ARRL (American Radio Relay League) Handbook is a good reference. Hobby Radio Operators should read the first 10 chapters. BTW, it's not SWRs.
--- 3:50 PM - According to a story on Texoma’s Home Page, the Firehawk Smokehouse, from Olney, Texas, will be moving into the former Mazzio’s Pizza building at 3902 Call Field Road. On Sundays, there will be an all-you-can-eat BBQ and salad bar from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The hours of operation will be Thursday-Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., and Sunday is the all-you-can-eat day from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. The story did not say if the Olney location was closing or if two locations were planned. Any all-you-can-eat offer is sure to draw a crowd in Wichita Falls.
--- 5:30 PM - Last year, I saw a report that The Colony (Dallas-Fort Worth area) will be home to the first White Castle in Texas. I grew up on White Castle sliders in St. Louis when they were 12¢. When we moved from St. Louis to Texas, they were 14¢. These days, I get them from the freezer at Walmart. I haven't had a fresh White Castle slider since 1999 on a trip to St. Louis.
--- 7:00 PM - If you're not a Harry Potter fan, and I am not, you might not know that the 2018 US Quidditch Southwest Regional Championship was held in Wichita Falls. I'm still not sure what to think about the sight of people running around a playing field with a stick between their legs. If they're happy, I'm happy. I'm sure they would laugh at me for using Morse code in 2026.
--- 7:25 PM - Remembering Wichita Falls Hirschi High School Alumnus John Mullins - aka Jon St. Elwood - aka Jazz Jackson on The Young & the Restless. I met John Mullins at Hirschi High School in the late 1960s. He wasn’t there when I started in 1966, nor when I graduated in 1970. I know he left to join the Job Corps sometime before I graduated. He lived a block from me. MORE!
