06-05-2026 - 5:00 AM - Good Morning! It’s Friday. We have rain in the forecast for today, and this is good because our lake levels are backsliding a bit. It’s not even Summer yet, so we don’t need that! The North Central Texas Simplex Net happens tonight at 8:00 PM on 146.580 MHz. Tune in with your scanner if you have a good outside antenna. These guys are down south, a few miles away. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 5:15 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 1pm. Partly sunny, with a high near 90. South southeast wind 8 to 10 mph. Tonight: A 50 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 69. South southeast wind 6 to 11 mph. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

--- 5:30 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 83.3% Kemp: 93.9% Kickapoo: 86.3%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 88.4% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (84.8%) to determine drought stage.

--- 5:45 - According to an article at Texas Monthly, the price of beef has "skyrocketed" due to the decrease in the number of cattle. Now, the screwworm threatens to raise prices even more. Barbeque editor Daniel Vaughn has published an article on the threat its effect on the price of brisket.

--- 6:07 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 10,367 Megawatts.

--- 6:15 - I'm starting the morning on the CB Radio, where there's already been local truck traffic. As I might have mentioned before, there is a marked decrease in radio traffic related to our two truck stops - the Flying J and Love's. Questions between drivers about fuel prices, arguments at the fuel pump, and other related traffic have declined. Come on, drivers, let's pick it up!

--- 8:25 AM - The Economics Daily

--- 8:34 AM - FEMA Daily Operations Briefing

--- 9:05 AM - I saw this headline online: "The Wall Street Mania Pushing Knicks Tickets to $176,000." That's interesting to me because I wouldn't attend an NBA game if it were free and a block away. But that's just me.

--- 11:40 AM - I just heard that well-known, often-heard, truck stop ad on CB Radio Channel 19 promoting the Flying J Travel Center at Exit 84 on I-40 in Russellville, Arkansas.

12:19 PM - I contacted a station in Big Muddy National Wildlife Refuge (US-0374) in Missouri on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

--- 1:30 PM - Storms are creeping up on us from the southwest. Unknown what will actually reach us, or our supply lakes. We’ll take all we can get over our lakes. I don’t think our Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn® storm spotters are in dire need of practice, so if we skip the “dangerous thunderstorms with hail and damaging winds” part, that will be fine with me.

--- 1:35 PM - Federal and state laws make intercepting and divulging radio communications illegal and punishable by severe criminal penalties, with certain exceptions. Get the facts here!

--- 4:00 PM - Consumer Product Safety Commission Recalls & Warnings

--- 5:30 PM - There has been a serious amount of clowning on the Family Radio Service frequencies over the last few days. I mean grown men, not kids. There are three or four of them this afternoon, and they’ve been going at it for several hours. It’s Friday evening, so they might have a little “adult beverage” assistance. Since they must be pretty close to me, I have an idea who they might be. Further monitoring is in order.

--- 6:00 PM - Since it looks like we’re going to get a data center on the north side of town, I might as well look at the silver lining in this cloud. That silver lining is the hopefully constant radio traffic from the construction crews. Only time will tell, but my scanner radio is ready!

6:15 PM - Has anyone ever given serious consideration to restoring the once-iconic sign next to the Pioneer #3 Restaurant at Old Iowa Park Road and Sheppard Access Road? I don't recall any such talk. It was probably a beautiful sight in its day.

--- 6:30 PM - The Local Group is on CB Radio Channel 23, talking about the weather forecast. Tune in with your scanner radio, or join in with your CB Radio.

--- 6:40 PM - I haven’t dined at Bradford’s Catfish Haus in well over a year, but it looks like they’re still going strong. I tried to look at their Facebook page, but it locks me out after one scroll of the mouse. Bradfords is located at 1616 Pearlie Dr in Wichita Falls. The phone number is (940) 424-9414.

--- 8:30 PM - I had a flashback about a story on one of our local news media websites last year about a man at a local motel who was charged with harboring a fugitive. The fugitive police were seeking was found hiding under a bed in the room. I wondered what hotel had a bed that you could hide under. I read the story and learned it was the Wayfarer Motel. That explained it.
