06-04-2026 - Good Morning! It’s Thursday, and it’s time to go home and get your shinebox! In the movie Goodfellas, one thug told another to go home and get his shinebox. It went downhill from there. The 8th Street Shine Parlor came to mind, and it reminded me of my childhood when it was not uncommon to see a kid on the corner with his shinebox, looking to make a few nickels and dimes. These days, who shines shoes? Well, I do. I still have a pair or two that I “spit shine” when needed. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 5:05 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 91. South southeast wind 6 to 10 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 70. South southeast wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.

--- 5:06 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 10,670 Megawatts.

--- 5:10 AM - NWS Short Range Weather Discussion

--- 5:15 AM - NWS Extended Range Weather Discussion

--- 5:20 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 83.4% Kemp: 94.0% Kickapoo: 86.3%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 88.5% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (84.85%) to determine drought stage.

--- 5:25 AM - According to news reports, the Wichita Falls Railroad Museum will hold a re-opening ceremony at 10:00 AM this Saturday at 500 9th Street. The museum will be open from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturdays. Here's an idea: have a scanner radio on, as part of the display, monitoring the local BNSF Railroad frequencies of 160.620, 160.920, 161.010, and 161.130 MHz.

--- 7:45 AM - According to a story on Texoma's Home Page, the State of Texas might be taking over the licensing of food trucks. The article mentioned two local food trucks, Daddy Bob's and Chickad's Coffee. Chickad's? That doesn't sound right. It took a moment of online searching to find out that the correct name is Chicka D's Coffee. I wonder why it sounded right to the author.

--- 7:55 AM - FEMA Daily Operations Briefing

--- 8:20 AM - Pet Peeve - Pun Intended - People riding a bike or jogging with their short-legged dog, legs in a blur, trying to keep up. What are you thinking?

--- 9:25 AM - I saw an article on the New York Times website about how bright city lights may make allergies worse. I didn't read it because we in Wichita Falls have more to worry about than bright city lights. How about the tooth-jarring block of 10th Street between Scott & Indiana? I can name a few other things.

--- 9:40 AM - I'm monitoring the CW (Morse code) portion of the 20-meter band on my old Yaesu 857D, looking for Parks on the Air® stations to contact. As is usually the case, I have already contacted the stations with strong signals. The ones I need have weak signals. I'll stay tuned since listening is good practice.

--- 10:25 AM - The Economics Daily

--- 4:30 PM - For some unknown reason, I started watching the first episode of SeaQuest DSV, starring Roy Scheider. That’s five minutes I’ll never get back. I guess it was okay thirty years ago. I didn’t watch it then either.

--- 6:10 PM - The Local Group is up and running again on CB Radio Channel 23. If you've been following my posts, you know they're on the air just about every evening around 5:30 PM. Sometimes, a little later. Get a CB Radio and join in, or listen in on your scanner radio.

--- 6:20 AM - I hear one of the Amateur (ham) Radio regulars, or semi-regulars, atop Mount Scott making contacts on 146.520 MHz FM simplex. I can't hear the stations he's contacting. Of course, they're not 800 feet above the surrounding terrain, either.

--- 8:00 PM - The Clay County (Henrietta) Amateur Radio Club is conducting its monthly meeting on the club's 146.800 MHz repeater. Tune in with your scanner radio. If you're in Wichita Falls, an outside antenna might be helpful.

--- 9:20 PM - It’s music and sound effect night on Channel 6, the “superbowl” of CB Radio. This is kind of rare. Usually, it’s operators proclaiming their superior RF and audio power. Speaking of sound effects, I heard the “bubble pack radio roger beep” guys earlier on 462.5625 MHz.
