06-01-2026 - 5:10 AM - Good Morning! It’s Monday, and a hot 97 degrees is forecasted for today. Last night, I saw a line of storms headed our way, but it was bedtime, and I have no idea if they reached us. I don’t have anything of importance on my schedule for today. I have Morse code on the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio running in the background while I await the 20-meter band and the CB Radio band to come alive. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!
--- 5:15 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny and hot, with a high near 97. South southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 71. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming light east southeast after midnight.
--- 5:20 AM - NWS Short Range Weather Discussion
--- 5:25 AM - NWS Extended Range Weather Discussion
--- 5:30 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 83.8% Kemp: 94.3% Kickapoo: 86.8%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 88.9% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (85.3%) to determine drought stage.
--- 6:00 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 11,102 Megawatts.
--- 7:15 AM - The CB Radio band is coming alive here in Wichita Falls. The heterodynes are flying, and the DX channels are busy. We're just beginning a descent from the peak of Solar Cycle 25, so there should be several more years of a skip-shooter's paradise. It’s going to be a good day.
--- 8:00 AM - I’m listening to a conversation on the GMRS frequency 462.600 MHz. It sounds like a distant repeater. I haven’t heard any call signs or location hints. We must have another tropospheric band opening (ducting) this morning.
--- 8:35 AM - FEMA Daily Operations Briefing
--- 10:30 AM - The Economics Daily
--- 2:50 PM - A trucker on CB Radio Channel 19 is entertaining listeners with a monologue on foreign truck drivers. It’s nothing we haven’t heard before.
--- 3:20 PM - According to news reports, Frank & Joe’s Coffee in Wichita Falls will close one of its three locations on June 13, 2026. This is the last day of their lease at that location, and they feel it’s time to consolidate operations within the remaining two locations in Parker Square and 4111 Southwest Parkway, our very own 6-lane Farm to Market Road.
--- 5:15 PM - The year was 1974. The location was the snack bar at McCully Barracks (Army), Wackernheim, Federal Republic of Germany. The occasion was lunchtime. I had decided to skip the chow hall. At my table and feeling a little mischievous, I loosened the cap on the salt shaker as a favor for the next customer. For the evening meal, I decided again to skip the chow hall and dine at the snack bar once more. I sat at the same table and dumped the salt on my food. Lesson: salt is bad for you!
--- 7:00 PM - Do you recall when the Nissan Xterra was introduced? The tagline was "Everything you need, nothing you don't". I know a guy who bought one and ordered, pre-delivery, every accessory imaginable. Everything except a CB Radio.
--- 8:10 PM - Not too long ago, I heard an oversized load coming through town, and these people were working on 151.940 MHz. This is a frequency in the license-free Multi-Use Radio Service. This is a good idea as they don't have to listen to all the skip-shooters and other static on the CB Radio. This MURS frequency provided crystal-clear communications! I think the trucking industry should abandon CB Radio Channel 19 and pick one of the 5 MURS frequencies.
--- 8:30 PM - The Wichita Falls City Council will hire an architect to convert the former Kirby Middle School building into the next Police Station. My idea: take a wrecking ball to it and start over.
--- 9:00 PM - I was listening to some guys on 462.5625 MHz. They would pop up on frequency every few minutes. I'm thinking they were using Family Radio Service "bubble pack" radios due to the never-ending "roger beeps". Also, this means they were pretty close to me. The interesting thing is that I heard more "rogers" and "I'm out" than I did actual content. I won’t identify the “handles” they were using. I’m sure their exchanges were meaningful, even if I couldn’t figure out what was going on.
