05-31-2026 - 6:25 AM - Good Morning! It’s Sunday, and the Wichita Amateur Radio Society will conduct its weekly informal net tonight at 8:00 PM on the club’s 146.940 MHz repeater. Check in if you’re a Ham Radio Operator, or tune in with your scanner radio. There’s hot weather in the forecast for the next several days, and no rain is expected (small chance) until Tuesday. Our lakes aren’t in terrible shape at the moment, but we don’t need to backslide. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
--- 6:30 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny and hot, with a high near 97. South wind 9 to 11 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 73. South wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
--- 6:35 AM - NWS Short Range Weather Discussion
--- 6:37 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 10,180 Megawatts.
--- 6:40 AM - NWS Extended Range Weather Discussion
--- 6:45 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 83.9% Kemp: 94.5% Kickapoo: 86.8%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 89.0% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (85.35%) to determine drought stage.
--- 8:05 AM - FEMA Daily Operations Briefing
--- 9:45 AM - There has been an increase in radio traffic in Wichita Falls on the shared FRS/GMRS frequencies over the last month or so. Sometimes they sound like FRS and sometimes GMRS. Oh well, it's all good.
--- 3:00 PM - It's a little amusing when people online see a box with a few dials and a microphone, and they automatically assume it's a CB Radio. For many, that's all they've ever heard of. That's probably due to some well-known movies of questionable value to the hobby. Well, they're not questionable to me, but that's another story.
3:40 PM - A few years ago, I registered the domain Citizens Band Radio dot com. It cost around $11. I let it expire. A few months ago, I thought about registering it again, if no one had it. The domain people wanted $4,999 for it. I have a suggestion as to what they can do with it.
--- 4:10 PM - I hear one of those CBers who ends every transmission with a "roger" posed as a question. It's like talking to someone and ending every sentence with "did you get that?" This guy seems to be enjoying the hobby, so I'll leave him alone. But I will spin the dial. Roger?
5:00 PM - When it comes to your Hobby Radio stations, antennas are more important than amplifiers. Some will say, "I'll get a big antenna and a big amplifier." If all amplifiers disappeared, CB Radio and maybe Amateur (ham) Radio would be much happier places. There's no corner of the globe that I haven't reached with 100 watts or less. I know, amplifiers will never go away. However, you can help the cause by taking your amplifier outside and smashing it with a sledgehammer. We all know that's not going to happen, either. I'd smash mine as an example, but I've never owned one.
07-15--2025 - 9:30 AM - I often hear a woman broadcasting a truck stop ad on Channel 19. I think she's near Amarillo. It could also be in Nevada. She's been doing it for years, so it must be working. If not, it didn't cost anything but 30 seconds of her time and a glance over her shoulder for "Uncle Charlie" (FCC), who, in all likelihood, will never show up.
--- 6:20 PM - I'm pretty sure it was Spec's here in Wichita Falls where I saw an employee packing a belt-mounted handheld two-way radio. One of these days, I'll hang out in the parking lot with my Uniden scanner, using the "close call" feature to see if I can determine their frequency.
--- 7:00 PM - Not much to report this evening. I've had the TV on most of the day, and have been reading online news and information. Every so often, I check the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® spotter page, hoping Alaska and Hawaii will show up. Those are the only two states I need to have made contacts in all 50 states in the Parks on the Air® program. I've made contact with Alaska and Hawaii before, just not for POTA. UPDATE: I checked the POTA page again to find that Alaska was on earlier, but left the building about 10 minutes ago.
