05-29-2026 - 5:00 AM - Good Morning! It's Friday, and a good time for Wichita Falls area Hobby Radio enthusiasts to make the short climb to the top of Mount Murphy in Lake Wichita Park with your handheld radio and make a contact! I know it's only 80 feet high, but it's all we've got! If you're feeling adventurous, you can set up a contact between Mount Murphy and Mount Trashmore (landfill) in Iowa Park. On another note, I saw the article "A Do-Nothing Day Makes Life Better" and I think this is true. I've been testing this theory for many years now, and I consider myself somewhat of an expert. The pay is not great! My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 5:05 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 92. Light and variable wind becoming south southwest 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 72. South wind 8 to 11 mph.

--- 5:20 AM - According to Water Data for Texas, Wichita Falls reservoirs are: Arrowhead: 84.1% Kemp: 94.6% Kickapoo: 86.9%. Monitored Water Supply Reservoirs are 89.1% full. The City of Wichita Falls uses combined levels of Arrowhead and Kickapoo (85.5%) to determine drought stage.

--- 5:31 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 9,762 Megawatts.

--- 6:00 AM - The year was 1966. The location was a lake near San Antonio. How near, I don’t remember. The event was an overnight fishing trip. The players were my father, my two brothers, my father’s friend, and his son. Another important player was the campfire. But first, let’s go back in time a little.

--- 6:40 AM - I hear two truckers on CB Radio, Channel 25, chatting as they pass through town. I guess they don't want to tie up Channel 19. Very considerate of them. One sounds like Boomhauer from the King of the Hill TV series. I think I reported yesterday about a Pilot Car driver who sounded like Boomhauer. I have found, over my many years of listening to the CB Radio, that the trucking industry has a higher percentage of CB Radio operators who sound like either Boomhauer or Festus from the old TV series Gunsmoke. I'm not trying to be funny. This is what I hear.

--- 7:30 AM - Today, school kids show off their new cell phones. When I was a school kid, the thing to show off was an AM pocket transistor radio emitting "I Want To Hold Your Hand" by the Beatles. The fact that a telescoping antenna was not needed to receive local AM broadcasts added to their stylish appearance. A leather case, made just for that model, added to the appeal. I never saw a kid in class listening to their radio with an earphone. We knew the rules. MORE.

--- 2:10 PM - Some people are passing through town and communicating with FRS (Family Radio Service) “bubble pack” radios. They’re using a shared FRS/GMRS (General Mobile Radio Service) frequency, but there’s no way a GRMS radio sounds this crappy! Therefore, I assign the crappiness to Family Radio Service radios.

--- 3:30 PM - A few years ago, Nellie Ohr and her "Ham Radio" license were a popular topic on social media. Some people think she got a license to engage in "secret squirrel" stuff. If you're going to conduct nefarious activities on Ham Radio, why would you bother to get a license? You certainly don't need a license to purchase the equipment. Life would be no fun without conspiracy theorists.

--- 6:05 PM - The Local Group is active on CB Radio Channel 23. I was trying to listen to them on my Yaesu 857D Amateur (ham) Radio, but it sounded like crap there. So, I switched to the President McKinley, where they sound fine. The Yaesu doesn't seem to handle AM well.

--- 7:45 - The North Central Texas Simplex Net kicks off at 8:00 PM on 146.580 MHz. I think I've been hearing a pre-net exercise that lasted quite a while. So, everyone should be warmed up for the real deal. We need more simplex nets. You never know when your repeater will bite the dust, and you might need to know, ahead of time, where to position yourself to hear and be heard by the net control station. Of course, some operators with big radios and antennas won’t need to worry about that. I'm not one of the "big guns."

--- 8:20 PM - On X, formerly known as Twitter, someone described CB Radio as "the Wild West of pissed-off truckers." I can understand that sentiment, but some people like the Wild West. I miss the CB Radio culture from the late 60s and early 70s. It was a time before certain movies taught people it was okay to talk like an idiot on the radio. Some will say those movies gave CB Radio a big boost. Of course it did, but it was a boost that wasn't needed. The only real beneficiaries of the boost were the radio manufacturers. Your mileage (wattage) may vary.
