05-23-2026 - 5:00 AM - Good Morning! It’s Saturday, and I’m going to try to do nothing of importance all day long. We got a little rain last night. I hope our water supply lakes got most of it. It’s Memorial Day weekend, a time to remember those who gave their lives for our freedom, not a time for BBQ and backyard parties. But, at the moment, it's time for some Morse code on the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band, along with a cup of Folgers Black Silk coffee.

--- 6:16 AM - ERCOT (Texas) snapshot of grid conditions - ERCOT reports that conditions are normal and there is enough power for current demand with an operating reserve of 10,307 Megawatts.
--- 7:00 AM - Being a Saturday, a group of area Amateur (ham) Radio Operators usually meet informally for breakfast at the Pioneer #3 (P3) Restaurant at Old Iowa Park Road and Sheppard Access Road. Look for vehicles with “extra” antennas and/or handheld radios on the table inside.
--- 7:30 AM - The Montague County Simplex Net will begin at 9:00 AM this morning on 147.500 MHz FM simplex. You’ll need a high outside antenna to hear this group.
--- 7:40 AM - FEMA Daily Operations Briefing
--- 8:20 AM - Some weekend Wichita Falls radio scanning targets: Walmart (154.570 MHz), Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), Wichita County Jail (155.520 MHz), State Hospital (154.800 MHz) city transit buses (453.5375 MHz), Wichita Valley Airport (122.800 MHz), Kickapoo Airport (122.700 MHz), Wichita Falls Regional Airport / SAFB (119.750 & 122.950 MHz), and the BNSF Railroad (160.920 MHz). --- 8:45 AM - Indianapolis 500 Amateur (ham) Radio Special Event Station W9IMS is on the air from May 18 to May 24 on 3.840, 7.245, 14.245, and 18.140 MHz. For a certificate & QSL confirming contact, write to Indianapolis Motor Speedway Amateur Radio Club, P.O. BOX 30954, Indianapolis, IN 46230.
--- 9:57 AM - I contacted a station in E.P. 'Tom' Sawyer State Park (US-1254) in Kentucky on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
--- 1:35 PM - Is it my imagination, or has there been more “non-weather” traffic on the 146.940 MHz repeater in Wichita Falls? In the recent past, one would get spanked for trying to make a call on this repeater. Spanked and told that the machine was for storm spotter and emergency use only. Who didn’t know about the restriction? Amateur (ham) Radio Operators passing through town, having looked up local repeaters in a repeater directory. Wait, why am I worried about it? I am not. I'm just making an observation.
--- 2:00 PM - It was 1975, and I was back in Texas from Savanna, Illinois, and off to the Presidio of San Francisco. Along the way, on I-40, was a plywood sign on a hill in the trees that read QTH (location) of (ham radio call sign). I don't remember the call, but I think it was a "7" call. I was probably in Arizona and not New Mexico, but there's no guarantee of that. There was a lot of traffic on CB Radio Channel 19 in those days.
--- 3:50 PM - The "movie" page in a 1949 issue of the Wichita Falls Times shows a Skyway Drive-In located at the Archer City cutoff. The Azteca Theater at 408 Flood Street, The Falls Drive-In, "just off Iowa Park Road on Sheppard Access Road". (Became the Twin Falls Drive-In.) The Open Air Theater on Iowa Park Road. (Was this an earlier name for the Twin Sheppard Drive-In in the 4000 Block of Old Iowa Park Road?) The Scottic Drive-In on the Henrietta Hwy near the Chicken Shack. The Lisa Theater at 1523 Monroe. The Gem and Texan theaters, locations not given. And our more recent editions, the Wichita, Strand, and Tower Theaters. Also mentioned was Playland Park at 27th & Jacksboro Hwy and the Dancehaven Club at 401 N. Scott.
5:30 PM - I contacted a station in Sandy Mush State Game Land (US-6949) in North Carolina on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
--- 6:30 PM - The Local Group is up and running on CB Radio Channel 23. I have them on in the background so I have no idea what they're talking about. I was watching the NASCAR race, but they're in what seems like a terminal rain delay. Since I'm not a big NASCAR fan, I'll probably find something else to watch.
--- 9:00 PM - Have you ever driven through the 400 Block of Flood Street? It's barren today, but the 400 and 500 blocks were once home to a theater, a hotel, a doctor's office, a dentist's office, a barber shop, a grocery store, an apartment building, a service station, an adult beverage store, and nightclubs. A few blocks away - in the 200 Block of 7th Street - was the home of the Skip Shooters QSL CB Radio Club.
--- 9:15 PM - Flashback - A lifetime ago, I was in a 4-seat Piper Cherokee on approach to Houston Intercontinental Airport, now George Bush Intercontinental Airport. We were cleared to land on one of the left side of the parallel runways. On our right was a Boeing 737, landing on the right-side runway. For a moment, we were side-by-side. That was an interesting sight.
