03-08-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature rising to near 57 by 9am, then falling to around 48 during the remainder of the day. North wind 7 to 12 mph increasing to 16 to 21 mph in the afternoon. Winds could gust as high as 31 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Tonight: A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm, then a slight chance of showers between 9pm and midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 37. North northwest wind 16 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 30 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%.

03-08-2024 - Good Morning! More rain is in the forecast for today, and possibly tonight. This is a good thing as long as it's just rain and not damaging hail or wind. I started working "Parks on the Air® on January 1 of this year and I've contacted operators in 75 parks so far. I'm not a serious "hunter", usually working 1 or 2 parks in any one day before moving on to other activities. I use the program mostly as a way to stay proficient in Morse code. This is the mode I prefer for this program. Morse code is dead! Long live Morse code! I was going to listen in on the 1947 kHz crew, but storms across the region are causing too much static. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready!

03-07-2024 - Chatter on the local Amateur (ham) Radio "weather" repeater - 146.940 MHz - indicates that our local storm spotters are watching the weather and are ready to activate if necessary. UPDATE: At 8:00 PM, the spotter net was activated and spotters are checking in and awaiting location assignments. Tune in with your scanner radio.

03-07-2024 - One restaurant closes - Salt & Pepper in Century Plaza - and another opens - La Fogata at 1107 Broad Street. La Fogata offers Mexican / Puerto Rican cuisine. This is the old Wendy's location that closed long ago.

03-07-2024 - I made contact with AB9CA at Percha Dam State Park (US-2711) in New Mexico on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

03-07-2024 - The James V. Allred Unit prison - 153.815 MHz - won't let go of that worn-out 10-code, 10-25. It means report in person or meet. The funny thing is, they won't say 10-25, they just say the "25" part. You hear it day in and day out - "Can you 25 with me at (location)? The even funnier part to me is that 25 has two syllables and meet has one syllable. If the 10-codes are designed for brevity, then saying "25" instead of "meet" is counterproductive. The world is moving to plain language but the Allred Unit, while close, has yet to catch up. Tune in to daily Allred operations with your scanner radio.

03-07-2024 - Good Morning! According to news reports, the Salt & Pepper, a "Mediterranean fine dining restaurant" in Century Plaza, will close in a few days. The restaurant announced a closing early last year but decided a few months later to stay open. Now they have decided to close. I have to wonder if it is dangerous for Wichita Falls restaurants to stray too far from burgers and fries. It seems that our oldest local eateries are, in fact, burger joints. Is this a good or a bad thing? I say it is what it is. And now, ladies, gentlemen, and others, my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready. I might grab a burger later!

03-06-2024 - There might be increased use of portable radios in our two new high schools (Legacy & Memorial) next year due to the increased size of the schools and because it will be like a "shakedown cruise" for both. I know 151.940 MHz is in use. I don't know why they would need more frequencies. Sporting events, maybe? More research is required. By the way, 151.940 is a frequency in the license-free Multi-Use Radio Service. Tune in with your scanner radio.

03-06-2024 - The North Texas State Hospital in Wichita Falls has a repeater. Their main frequency - 154.800 MHz - can be heard all over town. 03-06-2024 - I tuned the CB Radio to Channel 23 last night to find that the Local Group, usually active nightly from 5:30 PM to around 7:30 PM was, in fact, still active. Get a CB Radio and join the fun!

03-06-2024 - Good Morning! Here's a little tidbit of interesting information. Hughes Tool Company, once owned by the reclusive Howard Hughes, Jr., was located at 1916 E. Scott Ave. Huhges, Jr. inherited a majority interest in the company from his father. It was sold by Hughes in 1972 but retained the name. Hughes Tool Company merged with Baker International to form Baker Hughes Incorporated in 1987. I don't know when Hughes Tool left Wichita Falls, but I do know my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.
