07-12-2023 - From my corrections consultant: An Allred Unit Correctional Officer realized - on his drive home - that he had resigned without having to submit a letter of resignation. No letter was needed because he had left 4 marijuana joints on the desk in the gun tower he had just vacated.

07-12-2023 - In the mid-1960s, ROTC students at Hirschi High School were invited to bring their 22-caliber rifles to school to be fired on the ROTC firing range. These rifles were kept in the student's lockers until time for their ROTC period. This means the rifles were carried through the halls to and from the range. Some students walked to school with their rifles and back home again. No cops were called. No damns were given. It was a very different time.

07-12-2023 - Is Wichita Falls the "child sexual assault" capital of Texas? It seems that not a month goes by without someone being arrested for this crime. Is it something in the water? I do not know. UPDATE: Local news reports that a former postal worker and Sunday school teacher has been given a life sentence for "urging a 13-year-old girl to give him a “peep show” and take a shower with him". The report says there were 15 encounters. I think the jury is sending a strong message here!

07-12-2023 - From my corrections consultant: I was working 7 - 8 Gate at the Allred Unit one fine afternoon when a group of offenders were coming back from chow. From a distance all I could hear was "mumble mumble mumble", but just as two of them went by me I heard one ask the other: "Did they get your prints off of the gun?". Then it was "mumble mumble mumble" again as they got out of hearing range.

07-12-2023 - The old Hawk Ridge Golf Course is now a coyote sanctuary and weed farm. Not that kind of weed! People fish in the ponds. Kids play on the bridge. ATVs zip from one end to the other. Someone purchased the property a few years ago and had planned to convert it into a commercial & residential development. I guess that isn't going to happen because it's for sale again.

07-12-2023 - Have you been around long enough to have watched a movie at the Seymour Road Drive-In at Seymour Road and McNiel? Morrison's Supply and a few other businesses now occupy that location.

07-12-2023 - If it weren't so hot, I might consider driving to Amarillo to watch the Sod Poodles minor league baseball team. That name alone is worth a road trip! I'm still thinking about it.

07-12-2023 - It's time to give the Briggs & Stratton Q6500 generator its regular start-up. Wichita Falls is known for a power glitch or two every year. The Q6500 kept the lights, fridge, & furnace going at the Wichita Falls Man HQ during the 15 hrs we were without power during the Big Texas Freeze. You don't have to get a huge "run the whole household" unit. You can get a small unit and rotate though powering different appliances. For example, run a few window air conditioners (or the furnace) for a half-hour, then the refrigerator for a half-hour, and so on. Even the smallest unit will make a big difference in your "quality of life" when you lose commercial power.

07-12-2023 - Wichitan Army Specialist E-4 Zan Hess was killed in action in Vietnam in 1967. I just happened to see his name in what was then the wet cement of a new curb in the City View area of Wichita Falls. It said "My Name Is Zan Hess." I don't know if he did it, or if someone was trying to get him in trouble. Either way, thank you for your service and sacrifice, Zan.

07-11-2023 - The Clay County Amateur Radio Club holds its weekly Skywarn practice net on the club's 146.680 MHz repeater each Tuesday at 8 PM. Check in if you're a ham or listen on your scanner.

07-11-2023 - There is some argument over the origin of civilization - but this is unimportant compared with the question of when it will resume operation.

07-11-2023 - In the 1977 Wichita Falls City Directory, there are 94 listings under the heading of "Beauty Shops". I don't know how many there are in 2023, but it sounds like Wichita Falls has no excuse for a "bad hair" day. By the way, from Wikipedia: In July 2023 Afghanistan mandated the closure of beauty salons nationwide within a month.

07-11-2023 - Do you remember the "He Ain't Here" bar in Wichita Falls? The phone rings, and the bartender picks up and says "He ain't here". I don't remember if it was in that cluster of bars near Iowa Park Road at Sheppard Access Road, or if it was on North Scott. Whichever it was, he wasn't there.

07-11-2023 - Back 40 years ago and beyond, female employees at our local Gibson's Discount Center got off work at 1 PM on Saturdays. The men had to stay until closing. This was so the ladies could do what ladies do to prepare for Sunday, etc. That's the way it was. That would go over like a screen door on a submarine today.

07-11-2023 - From my law enforcement consultant: A story about a man who thought about his family. On a family disturbance call that turned out not to be one, a woman told Wichita Falls police that her husband refused to get off the sofa and do work around the house or look for a job. The man, while supine, told police that his wife didn't understand that most of his work was mental. The officers suggested marriage counseling and departed.

07-11-2023 - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 209,000 in June 2023 as employment in government, health care, social assistance, and construction continued to trend up. Nonfarm employment has grown by an average of 278,000 per month over the first 6 months of 2023, lower than the average of 399,000 per month in 2022.

07-11-2023 - Visible pass of the International Space Station over Wichita Falls - Time: Tue Jul 11 10:17 PM, Visible: 7 min, Max Height: 54°, Appears: 10° above WSW, Disappears: 10° above NE.

07-11-2023 - Were you around for the good old days of the Texas "Blue Laws"? Back then - in the 1960s and 70s for me - stores were restricted in what they could sell on consecutive weekend days. If a store sold "anything and everything on Saturday, it couldn't sell much more than food, medicine, and household goods on Sunday. Car dealerships could be open Saturday or Sunday, but not both days. Hard liquor could not be sold on Sunday, and that law remains in effect today.

07-11-2023 - From the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau - Today, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) ordered Bank of America to pay more than $100 million to customers for systematically double-dipping on fees imposed on customers with insufficient funds in their account, withholding reward bonuses explicitly promised to credit card customers, and misappropriating sensitive personal information to open accounts without customer knowledge or authorization. The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) also found that the bank's double-dipping on fees was illegal. Bank of America will pay a total of $90 million in penalties to the CFPB and $60 million in penalties to the OCC.

07-11-2023 - A few years ago, Comanche County (Oklahoma) deputies, upon finding a man not on his best behavior in Lawton, delivered that man to our I-44 Walmart where his bad behavior continued. Question: Have we returned the favor? Of course not. Two wrongs don't make a right!
