02-07-2024 - From my law enforcement consultant - Police were called to a local auto salvage yard regarding a deceased man pinned under a car. The man, it seems, had jacked up the rear of the car was was under the right, rear wheel when the jack failed. The tire and wheel had already been removed and, when the jack failed, the wheel hub landed on the man's chest. Why he was under the wheel hub is unknown. He was not an employee of the yard nor owner of the car.

02-07-2024 - I walked back into the room to catch the "tail end" of an Air Evac Life Team communication on the scanner radio. I don't know if they're leaving on a mission or returning from one. You can keep up with the action by plugging 159.900 MHz on your scanner radio.

02-07-2024 - According to a story by Radio 102.3 "The Bull", Bowie will be getting a roadside travel center - possibly near the Walmart - similar to the one in Henrietta - with a Taco Bell and a Starbucks.

02-07-2024 - I made contact with AE5X in Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park (US-3647) in Florida on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

02-07-2024 - Good Morning! I sprayed my yard for weeds yesterday and e-filed our income tax return. Both tasks took about a half-hour. Exhausting! I think I'll relax and play on the radio today. Speaking of taxes, I heard a news report about people filing taxes this year who still have not received their refund from last year's filing! The Covid pandemic's effect on the IRS can still be felt if you filed a paper return. This is our third year of e-filing, and we've been getting our refund by direct deposit in less than 10 days. Enough talk about work! My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready! Be jealous, Starbucks drinkers!

02-06-2024 - The Clay County Amateur Radio Club conducts a weekly Skywarn practice net on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM on the club's 146.800 MHz repeater. All licensed Amateur Radio Operators are invited to check in. Scanner listeners are also welcome. UPDATE: I tuned in to this session. There were a lot of check-ins and lots of commentary.

02-06-2024 - Bureau of Labor Statistics - On the last business day of December, there were 8.0 million total private job openings, little changed from 7.9 million in November. Over the month, the rate was unchanged at 5.6 percent. 02-06-2024 - I made contact with AC5K in Compton Hollow State Recreation Area (US-10386) in Missouri as part of the Parks on ther Air program.

02-06-2024 - Today: Mostly sunny, with a high near 64. Calm wind becoming south around 6 mph in the afternoon. Tonight: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 46. South southeast wind around 8 mph.

02-06-2024 - Good Morning! I'll start today by reporting that the 20-meter band conditions yesterday were not kind to my attempts to work another park or two in the Parks on the Air® program. When I would hear a station with decent signal strength, they'd quickly fade away before I could make a call. Maybe conditions will be better today. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready, and that's all that's important right now. By the way, do you have a way to communicate it really "hits the fan"? And, it's foggy out this morning!

02-05-2024 - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - A total of 169.8 million people worked at some point during 2022, up by 2.9 million from 2021. In 2022, labor market conditions continued to recover from the recession brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The percentage of workers who worked full time, year round (that is, 50 to 52 weeks) increased from 69.8 percent in 2021 to 71.0 percent in 2022—a series high. This proportion was also 0.8 percentage point higher than the pre-pandemic figure in 2019.

02-05-2024 - Concerning the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program, stations at the Mississippi Palisades State Park, and the Presidio of San Francisco National Historic Site are two that I would like to contact. I might even activate those parks myself one day. I was stationed at the Presidio, a U.S. Army post, which was closed and turned over to the National Park Service some years ago. Just north of the Mississippi Palisades State Park is the Savanna Army Depot where I was stationed for a year in the mid-1970s.

02-05-2024 - I've moved on from the 1947 kHz crew and switched to the scanner radio for other local action. Here are some Wichita Falls scanner radio frequencies: Walmart (154.570 MHz), Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), the County Jail (155.520 MHz), State Hospital (154.800 MHz) city transit buses (453.5375 MHz), school handheld radios (151.940 MHz), and school buses (152.360 MHz) are active this morning, and will be for the rest of the day.

02-05-2024 - NWS forecast - Today: Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 60. North wind 8 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 37. North wind around 6 mph becoming calm after midnight.

02-05-2024 - Good Morning! It's 6:30 AM and the local guys are on 1947 kHz (160 meters) already. This has always been called the "gentleman's band. I guess this is because few people take the time and effort to put up an antenna that's efficient on 160 meters. The longer the wavelength, the longer the antenna has to be to be resonant. There could be other explanations for that name. Anyway, my Folgers Black Silk is ready. I'll have a sip while I feel sorry for the poor folks waiting in line at Starbucks.

02-04-2024 - The Wichita Amateur Radio Society holds a weekly informal net on Sundays at 8:00 PM on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. All licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operators are invited to check in. Scanner radio enthusiasts are also invited to listen in.

02-04-2024 - I heard KI5GSR atop Mt. Scott (north of Lawton, Oklahoma) talking to a station here in Wichita Falls on 146.520 FM simplex. I think I heard him mention Parks on the Air®. He might be making contacts under that program.

02-04-2024 - I made contact with KO4VRM in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (US-1886) in Florida on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
