11-16-2023 - From my corrections consultant - Hypodermic needles were being found during routine cell searches. I worked in the Infirmary on a semi-regular basis. Offenders requiring insulin were all scheduled to receive that insulin beginning at 1700 hours. I received instructions to pat down those offenders to make sure they weren't attempting to take needles out of the Infirmary. Were they serious? They wanted me to search for needles - used needles - with my bare hands? Were they going to issue me Kevlar gloves? Doubtful. Being that I'm ultimately responsible for my health and welfare, I decided to ignore the pat-down instructions. Instead, I stood beside each offender and made sure he deposited the used syringe into the "sharps" container.

11-16-2023 - Casino training comes early in Wichita Falls. A baby craps class was seen on a 7th Street building. A slot machine trainer was seen on a playground in Scotland Park. The babies have been covered over and the slots trainer broken to pieces over time.

11-16-2023 - Real estate agents need to drop the term "starter home". What you call a starter home might be all many people will ever be able to afford.

11-16-2023 - An enterprising young man - I'll call him Joe - started an advertising publication called Joe's Adsheet. He placed it on the door of homes on the north side of town. I only saw one issue but it was great to see someone trying to get a side gig going. I guess it didn't work out. I don't remember the actual name on the adsheet. I think "Joe" should have given away a bunch of ad space to area businesses for the first issue. Maybe he tried. I've had a few "advertising" websites over the last couple of decades and I can tell you that giving away ad space in Wichita Falls is like pulling teeth. Business owners looked at me like I had "something up my sleeve."

11-16-2023 - In the News - Suspect arrested for assaulting WFPD officers, Electrical shock hospitalizes city employee, Man pleads guilty to dealing fentanyl, sexual assault, Missing 12 y.o. found alive and safe, Man accused of having big stash of fentanyl pills.

11-16-2023 - Good Morning! I'm listening to local trucking chatter on CB Radio Channel 1 as I enjoy my first cup of coffee. There is a local company, or maybe just a couple of drivers, who are on that channel almost every morning. I'm listening on the President McKinley CB Radio with a nice channel scan feature. It's not cold out this morning but I still have a fireplace video going on the big-screen TV! As I might have mentioned before, the real fireplace is at the other end of the house.

11-15-2023 - From the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics - Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 150,000 in October 2023, below the average monthly gain of 258,000 over the prior 12 months. Job gains occurred in health care, social assistance, and government while employment in manufacturing declined.

11-15-2023 - From my law enforcement consultant - Decades ago, there was a large decorative fountain in the middle of one of our streets. It might have been Pennsylvania. One afternoon a man drove to the fountain to find several kids nearby. He told them to get out of the way. He drove down the street, turned around, accelerated toward the fountain, and struck it, killing himself. I'm sure those kids will never forget that. I didn't see it happen but I did see what was left of the fountain. Those were the days when you could listen to police calls on your scanner at 460.350, 460.225, and 460.275 MHz. Were you tuned in?

11-15-2023 - Good Morning! It's 0530 hours and I'm having a little Morse code on the 80-meter Ham Radio band along with my Folgers Black Silk coffee this morning. On the scanner, our Air Evac Lifeteam is active on 159.900 MHz. At the Allred Unit - 153.815 MHz, it's "Count Time, Count Time". Switching over to the 40-meter band, still in the Morse code mode, there's a DX station attracting a lot of attention. I don't hear the DX station, just the cacophony of the stations trying to make contact. More coffee, please!

11-14-2023 - I just learned that Wichita Falls has a pole dancing school at 719 Scott Ave, Suite 1104. That's the 11th floor on Big Blue. This is unique. Even if someone had no intention of using such a skill commercially, it sounds like an excellent form of exercise. It reminds me of my younger days when we would show off by extending our bodies at a 90-degree angle from stop-sign poles.

11-14-2023 - From my law enforcement consultant - Two WFPD officers, in the same car, were driving on E. Scott near Rosewood. As they passed by the rear of the Pizza Inn on Galveston, a man crossed the street right in front of them. He gave the officers a slightly shocked look at about the same time the police radio erupted with "Armed Robbery, Pizza Inn, 504 Galveston. Suspect is . . ." He was found a few minutes later under a car a block away.

11-14-2023 - The local Air Evac Lifeteam has been dispatched on a transfer. This team stays pretty active and yyou can keep up with all the action at 159.900 MHz on your scanner.

11-14-2023 - The Local Group is active on CB Radio Channel 23 right now. They are usually on from 1730 - 1930 hours each evening. They would probably like to hear from you!

11-14-2023 - From the U.S. Federal Communications Commission - AMENDMENT OF PART 97 OF THE COMMISSION'S AMATEUR RADIO SERVICE RULES TO PERMIT GREATER FLEXIBILITY IN DATA COMMUNICATIONS, REPORT AND ORDER AND FURTHER NOTICE OF PROPOSED RULEMAKING. The Commission adopts this R&O and FNPRM to eliminate the baud rate limitation and establish a bandwidth limitation in certain amateur bands. The item also proposes removal of the baud rate limitation in several additional bands.

11-14-2023 - From the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics - A look at nurse practitioners for National Nurse Practitioner Week - Nurse practitioners are a type of registered nurse with specialized graduate education of at least a master's degree. Although their duties vary by state, nurse practitioners in many states can work independently and provide some of the same services as physicians, including conducting physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, prescribing medications, and administering treatments.

11-14-2023 – From my law enforcement consultant - Several WFPD officers took morning coffee breaks at the Old Holiday Inn East on E. Scott. One morning, one of those officers, off duty and entertaining out-of-town guests, chose the Holiday Inn restaurant for breakfast. The waitress attended to the group for several minutes before recognizing the officer. She said to the officer, in a voice loud enough for the whole dining room the hear: "Oh, I didn't recognize you with your clothes on!" The room erupted in laughter.

11-04-2023 - On Loop 11, the loop that doesn't loop, just south of Old Iowa Park Road, there is a turn lane cut out for those wanting to turn around and go in the opposite direction. It's interesting how they planted a little mini-forest on each side of this turn-around, just where you need to see oncoming traffic the most.

11-14-2023 – From my law enforcement consultant - A Wichita Falls police officer, while on duty, stopped by a convenience store once too often to flirt with the employee. He ignored her requests to cease and desist. A call was made to the police department. Undercover officers chilled in the walk-in refrigerator, recording devices ready. The officer visited, the chilled agents made their report, and the officer was sacked. It probably wasn't the sack he had in mind. In more modern times, an officer was fired for inappropriate social media posts.

11-14-2023 - You might have seen the radio antenna tower that sits just west of the intersection of U.S. 287 (Northwest Freeway) and Loop 11 (the loop that doesn't loop). This tower replaced the tower that fell to the ground about 30 years ago. The story was that corrosion ate away at one of the buried guy wire anchors until, one day, it gave way.

11-14-2023 - Today is National Seat Belt Day, National Family PJ Day, World Diabetes Day, National Spicy Guacamole Day, and National Pickle Day.
