11-12-2023 - Today is World Pneumonia Day, National French Dip Day, National Chicken Soup For The Soul Day, and National Pizza With The Works Except Anchovies Day.
11-12-2023 - Good Morning! Along with my first cup of coffee, I'm tuning across the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band in search of some Morse code to start the day. I hear a U.S. station calling CQ DX. I'm not DX for a U.S. station, but I'll keep listening to see who he snags.
11-11-2023 - The CB Radio band is wide open this evening. I've been spinning the dial, spending a few minutes on each channel, and lots of people are having a good time. The Sultan of Splatter is on Channel 11, and three channels above and below that, but I'll just ignore him. There have been times when I could not ignore him, as he was splattering across the entire band. I don't hear the Local Group on Channel 23. I'm not sure what to think about that.
11-11-2023 - Good Morning! It's shift change at the Allred Unit and a Sergeant is posting the officers to the gun towers. Soon, those who drink coffee will have their coffee pots going as they survey the limits of their posts. Our corrections consultant tells me that the "Post Orders" for the towers are a little vague on when you can shoot an offender climbing over a fence. In case you didn't know, the Allred Unit is surrounded by two fences. Can you shoot an offender as he climbs the first fence, or do you have to wait until he starts to climb the second fence? Can you shoot him as he climbs the second fence, or do you have to wait until he's completely over it and on the ground? It's not covered in the Post Orders. The Texas Penal Code is not vague and clearly states that deadly force can be used to prevent a state offender from escaping. As for Post Orders, they are all sufficiently vague to allow one to be disciplined for just about anything. That's the opinion of our consultant. Tune in to Allred at 153.815 MHz on yourr scanner.
11-10-2023 - Listen for the Windycon 49 - Science Fiction Convention Special Event Station - W9W - this weekend on 14.070 14.230 14.274 MHz.
11-10-2023 I hear a "ham" on 146.580 MHz this evening, racking up simplex contacts. He says he's in Wise County. He's the only one I hear. It sounds like he's just making contacts rather than running a net. Tune in with your scanner.
11-10-2023 - Two bodies were found in Wichita Falls this week. One was found at the gas pumps at the Flying J. The other, that of a missing person, was found on Pearlie Drive behind the former Qui's Buffet.
11-10-2023 - The year was 1974. The place was the snack bar, McCully Barracks, Wackernheim, Federal Republic of Germany. The occasion was lunchtime. I had decided to skip the chow hall and treat myself to lunch at the post snack bar. At my table and feeling a little mischievous, I loosened the cap on the salt shaker as a favor for the next customer. For the evening meal, I decided again to skip the chow hall and dine again at the snack bar. I sat at the same table and dumped the salt on my food. Lesson: salt is bad for you!

11-10-2023 - From my law enforcement consultant - Police received a call about a man walking along Old Iowa Park Road carrying a handgun. Officers located the man just west of Loop 11 (the loop that doesn't loop). After the usual "drop the gun, get on the ground, etc.", it was determined that the gun was not a firearm, but the hand grip portion of a handheld crossbow. The bow part was missing, causing the rest of the contraption to resemble a semi-automatic pistol. It was also determined that the man might have been mentally challenged. He was instructed on the error of his ways and released. Not long after the incident, the man's mother called the station to complain that officers got her son dirty. I still see the man from time to time. I call him Mr. PeeTree because I once saw him peeing on a tree near his home.
11-10-2023 - When you're on the north side of town and you need a donut or two, stop by the Circle M Bakery or Tommy's Donuts on Old Iowa Park Road. Tommy's also offers tasty breakfast burritos, and fried rice, egg rolls, and other goodies at lunch time. Both are just a "stone's throw" west of I-44.
11-09-2023 - I'm watching Better Call Saul, Season 5, Episode 6, where Mike, using a Galaxy DX 949 CB radio, set to Channel 3, with no antenna connected, calls police dispatch to run a car tag number. And, of course, he gets an answer loud and clear. I don't know what to think about that. This is right up there with Joe Pesci calling a distributor/spark plug wire a "timing chain" in The Irishman.
11-09-2023 - From my corrections consultant - It was Sunday at the Allred Unit and a woman and her daughter came to visit the woman's husband. The husband was also the daughter's father. The daughter's clothing was not up to TDCJ regulations for visitors and the woman was so informed. The woman became a little irate, telling officers that the two had visited her son at another prison just the day before and the daughter's clothing was just fine. She said that with a son in one unit and a husband in another unit, she was well aware of regulations. She was informed that perhaps officers at the other unit were a little lax in enforcing regulations. She was directed to the nearest Walmart to obtain suitable clothing for her daughter.
11-09-2023 - Let it be known, let it be written: I miss Pacadilly Restaurant, formerly in Sikes Senter Mall, and before that on 8th Street where the Professional Wrestling Hall of Fame is or was located. I also miss Golden Corral. How about Callaway's BBQ on 10th Street? And let's not forget Bonanza on Seymour Hwy at Kemp and their "all-you-can-eat" shrimp nights. Those ribeye steaks were pretty good, too.
11-09-2023 - From my law enforcement consultant - At a long-closed Wichita Falls gun store, a customer was looking at a flashlight. A gun store employee remarked that this particular flashlight was practically indestructible unless you hit a n****r over the head with it. Good old Wichita Falls.
11-09-2023 - Our city transit bus drivers are up, and running, and having a grand old time, and that's all I'll say about that. Tune in at 453.5375 MHz on your scanner and experience it for yourself!
11-09-2023 - From my corrections consultant - It was chow time in 11-Building at the James V. Allred Unit. On the first floor, and offender told an officer that an offender on the second floor didn't get anything to drink. The boss asked the offender how he knew this. The offender said he heard it on the "vent phone". Tune in to the Allred Unit at 153.815 MHz on your scanner.
11-09-2023 - Today is World Adoption Day, World Freedom Day, National Louisiana Day, Microtia Awareness Day, and National Scrapple Day.
11-09-2023 - Good Morning! I'm enjoying my usual Folgers Black Silk, but I'm also reading about the new Brewnita Café, serving Mexican-influenced iced coffees, which has opened at 3115 Kemp Blvd. Now, instead of asking people to drop out of line at Starbucks and go to Frank & Joe's Coffee, I'll have to add Brewnita Cafe to the list of alternatives. On a slightly different subject, our local news media reports that a dead body was found at the gas pumps at our Flying J truck stop. Let's see how that develops.
