08-01-2023 - It's back-to-school on August 16 for Wichita Falls, and that means a few more short-range (school handheld radios) and long-range (school buses) to tune in on your scanner. The school bus repeater is 152.360 MHz. I'll be confirming the handheld frequencies later.

07-31-2023 - I don't know if the new CB Radio FM mode will be popular. Only time will tell. I can take it or leave it. I'm sure I'm not going to buy a radio without SSB, so if FM is included, fine. If not, that's fine, too.

08-01-2023 - I'm up waiting for the USA Girls soccer team to play Portugal at 2 AM (0200), and I hear two truckers chatting on CB Radio Channel 19. The band is closed - no skip - so the channel is clear for the truckers. It should be clear anyway, but that's another story.

07-31-2023 - The Evening Crew is on the air on CB Radio Channel 23. It sounds like a party of five so far. Maybe more will show up. Some interesting talk about tornadoes tonight, and a couple of the guys hung in there for 3 hours or more. I don't think I've ever heard our local Ham Radio operators on the air with a similar, regular event.

07-31-2023 - From my corrections consultant - A little over a decade ago, a couple of civilian employees from the Allred Unit bought a bunch of small plants from Walmart. They asked the Walmart employee if the plants could be returned if the "end user" didn't like them. The employee responded in the affirmative. Unknown to Walmart, these plants were to be used to decorate tables at an event at the Allred Unit, and there was no plan to keep them. Sure enough, the plants were returned for a refund after the event. Not cool, even if it's Walmart! Tune in to the Allred Unit at 153.815 MHz on your scanner.

07-31-2023 - The Wichita County Jail, on 155.520 MHz, is probably the least exciting scanner target in town. I would say that 95% of their radio traffic consists of officers calling for Central Control to open doors. At the old Sprague Annex, the "tanks" had gates in a "sallyport" configuration. I don't know what it looks like at the new location, but it sounds like the cells, tanks, or whatever are still opened remotely. Tune in with your scanner.

07-31-2023 - On CB Radio Channel 19, a trucker passing through Wichita Falls is griping about the fact that he wants to get to Fort Worth but he only has 58 minutes before shutting down for a mandatory break. Truckin' ain't easy!

07-31-2023 - Do you remember the "He Ain't Here" bar in Wichita Falls? The phone rings and the bartender picks up and says, "He ain't here." I don't remember if it was in that cluster of bars near Iowa Park Road at Sheppard Access Road or if it was on North Scott. Whichever it was, he wasn't there.

07-31-2023 - As you might expect, the CB Radio band is wide open with signals flying here and there. The skip shooters continue, for some unknown reason, to populate Channel 19.

07-31-2023 - The coffee is ready, and the scanner radio is monitoring local activity. The busiest is the Allred Unit. City buses are coming alive and other entities will soon pick up the pace. The Hotter'N Hell Hundred bike ride happens Saturday, August 26. This will be a great opportunity to hear local Amateur (ham) Radio operators in action as they provide communications support for the event. Monitor 147.140, 146.940, and 444.000 MHz.
