07-29-2023 - I heard two stations, both mobile, on 154.570 MHz. This is a Multi-Use Radio Service frequency used by all three Wichita Falls Walmart stores. This is the first time I've heard someone else on the frequency. They might have been passing through town. MURS is license-free and open to all users.
07-29-2023 - I hear a staticky conversation on 462.5625 MHz. This is a GMRS/FRS shared frequency. I think they're using FRS because one of them has a "roger beep" activated.
07-29-2023 - The CB Radio band is alive and well this morning. This is the first time I've tuned in this morning. Sometimes other activities get in the way.
07-28-2023 - Ham Holiday, the Oklahoma City hamfest, is happening today and Saturday. It's not too far away and I would attend if not for other obligations. I'll catch another one, someplace, somewhere down the road.
07-28-2023 - The year was 1976, and I was sitting in the barracks at the Presidio of San Francisco while tuning across the VHF FM band. I was using an AM-FM "good times" radio with extended VHF capability. I heard a well-known actor on his car phone talking about his then-current TV series. Those were the days.
07-28-2023 - I spun the CB Radio dial to Channel 38 LSB to find the ever-present 813 in Georgia holding court and racking up the contacts. He doesn't have the strongest signal but seems to be in there more often than any other operator. This guy has permanent party status on Channel 38.
07-28-2023 - According to news reports, the old Hotel by the Falls will be coming down. The big question is, what will become of that property? It's a good location for another hotel. How about expanding the City's RV park? How about a "tower" restaurant? Not Tower of the Americas tall, but maybe half that.

07-28-2023 - Do you remember the Software Lending Library here in Wichita Falls? It was in that shopping center on the southeast corner of Kemp & Hampstead. This was around 1995 or so. I only stopped by once to see what it was all about.
07-28-2023 - A local "ham" has made himself known on the simplex frequency of 146.520 MHz, but no one responded. Someone is getting some "touch-and-go" flight time in at Wichita Valley Airport at 122.800 MHz, the North Texas State Hospital is alive on 154.800 MHz, and a trucker on CB Radio Channel 19 is talking about his joints hurting.
07-28-2023 - I was stationed at the now-defunct Savanna Army Depot in Savanna, Illinois from 1974-1975. There, I guarded what the military calls Special Weapons. They were stored in earth-covered bunkers. You know the type of weapons I'm talking about. We had a V-100 (Google it) standing by for the Back-Up Alert Force. Sometimes, when I wasn't patrolling the bunkers, I'd sit in the V-100, crank up the "boat anchor" VHF radio, and listen to radio traffic in the area. Boat anchor is Hobby Radio-speak for big and heavy.

07-28-2023 - It's coffee time! The County Jail and the Allred Unit are active on the scanner. They're always active. A local trucking company is active on CB Radio Channel 1. Channel 19 is still asleep as is the band in general. Walmart is coming alive, getting ready for another day. Our city transit buses are warming up, getting ready for a busy day. I think they work their jaws harder than those buses but that's another story.
07-27-2023 - A Hobby Radio enthusiast in San Francisco tells me he regularly drives to the areas of Coit Tower and Sutro Tower and listens to the city on his scanner. He also misses the old days of analog cordless phones.
07-27-2023 - Somewhere in the area of W. Wenonah, Westerly, and Pershing Drive, near the old Army Reserve building, was a house containing the coveted Browning Golden Eagle CB Radio. It was around 1969 or 1970 when I got a peek at it and heard the "Ping" live and in living color. While I've heard them on the air, that was the first and last time I had seen one in the wild.
07-27-2023 - LAREDO, Texas—U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Office of Field Operations (OFO) officers seized 61 pounds of the psychedelic controlled substance dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in a single enforcement action. The seizure occurred on Wednesday, July 26 at the Gateway to the Americas Bridge. CBP officers referred a pedestrian carrying cardboard boxes for a secondary examination. During the examination, CBP officers discovered 12 bags within the boxes allegedly containing a total of 60.80 pounds of DMT. CBP seized the narcotics. Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) special agents are investigating the seizure
07-27-2023 - I hear more female pilots and air traffic controllers on the radio than female truck drivers. One reason could be that pilots and controllers are required to talk, whereas truck drivers can make it through town without a word on CB Radio Channel 19.

07-27-2023 - I have the first issue - 1962 - of "S9 The Citizens Band Journal." I bought it on eBay several years ago. The spine is in less-than-perfect condition. It's not detached but it's getting a little worn. Some library archival tape might be in order. Maybe I'll find one in perfect condition one of these days.
07-27-2023 - CB Radio is the only choice for license-free, long-distance, 2-way radio communications. Other services such as the Family Radio Service (FRS) and the Multi Use Radio Service (MURS) are license-free, but they're not long-distance. Amateur (ham) Radio is long-distance, but not license-free. The General Mobile Radio Service (GMRS) is neither license-free or long-distance.
