07-15-2023 - The CB Radio band has gone flat this evening, but 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) is still going strong. Wichita Falls "scanner land" is still active - County Jail, Walmart, Allred Unit prison, and others.
07-15-2023 - I had a lot of fun with CB Radio at Fort Hood in 1972. I remember one married couple who re-enlisted and used their bonuses to buy more CB Radio equipment. Those were the days!
07-15-2023 - I hear W1AW/7 on 14.032 MHz. The operator is in Utah. I forgot about these W1AW portable operations.
07-15-2023 - I'm listening on CB Radio Channel 19 to a trucker who sounds like he's in a barrel surrounded by rubber bands. I don't understand the point but if he's happy, I'm happy.
07-15-2023 - Waste Connections, an area waste management company, is busy as heck on the radio this morning. Tune in at 463.300 MHZ on your scanner.
07-14-2023 - Flashback from the late 1970s - Wichita Falls had 6 Piggly Wiggly stores and 15 Jiffy stores scattered about the city. The Jiffy stores were magnets for armed robbers, but more than a few Jiffy clerks were suspected of filling their own car's gas tank and calling in a "gas drive-off". This was a time before pay-at-the-pump and surveillance cameras. These were the days before the Police Department encrypted its radio communications and it was a great time to be a scanner enthusiast.
07-14-2023 - I'm thinking one or more Detention Officers at the Wichita County Jail have traded their handheld radios for two-way potatoes. Some transmissions seem very garbled to me, but the officers seem to understand each other. I guess that's all that matters. Tune in at 155.520 MHz on your scanner.
07-14-2023 - Over a dozen years ago, the downtown YMCA was using those Family Radio Service "walkie-talkies" to keep up with each other in the building. Well, at least keep up with the maintenance man. I don't know what type of radios are in use today, or if they are still using radios. Our Walmart stores are getting so big that I've seen one family using FRS radios to keep tabs on each other inside the building.
07-14-2023 - The doorbell rang. I checked my door cam. I could see that he had a name tag and a clipboard. That's all I need to know. Adios My Friend!
07-13-2023 - From my corrections consultant - On very hot days, Allred Unit Correctional Officers have, in the past, delivered ice to the cells. Sometimes, inmates who are locked up most of the day are let out to get ice water. Tune in to the Allred Unit on your scanner at 153.815 MHz.

07-13-2023 - I was watching the 2009 Star Trek movie when I noticed - again - several dual-band and tri-band mobile antennas, commonly used in Amateur (ham) Radio, affixed to one of the consoles on the bridge. This was totally out of place.
07-13-2023 - In May, the number and rate of quits increased to 4.0 million (+250,000) and 2.6 percent, respectively. The construction industry had the highest quits rate increase among the major industries, 0.8 percentage points over the month to reach 2.9 percent. This represents a drop in construction industry quits from 170,000 to 227,000.
07-13-2023 - A few decades ago, there was a story floating around about an employee of the City Traffic Engineering Department who was reprimanded or fired for programming certain traffic signals to make his ride home from work a little smoother. It's Wichita Falls - all rides home are pretty smooth.

07-13-2023 - In the area that is now a city bus stop just outside the Sheppard Air Force Base Main Gate were apartments, a service station, a hotel, and other businesses. One of those businesses was a Wacker's discount or "five & dime" store. Back in the mid-1960s, a kid selected a slingshot and took it to the cashier. The slingshot had no price tag and the young female cashier held it up and yelled "Hey Joe, how much is this n****r shooter?" Wackers closed one day and Second Hand Sports became the new occupant. Do you remember them?
07-13-2023 - It's radio check time for Air Evac Lifeteam (159.900 MHz) and roll call time for our City transit buses (453.5875 MHz).
