04-26-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Partly sunny, then gradually becoming sunny, with a high near 86. Southwest wind 15 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Tonight: Increasing clouds, with a low around 66. South wind 11 to 17 mph, with gusts as high as 24 mph.

04-26-2024 - Good Morning! At 3:20 AM, I was rudely awakened by thunderstorms. I turned on my scanner radio to hear that our local Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn storm spotters had been activated. You can tune in to Wichita County spotters at 146.940 MHz on your scanner radio. The Clay County spotters can be heard at 146.800 and 146.680 MHz. The storm seems to be in its last stages, so I'm headed back to bed!

04-25-2024 - WASHINGTON, April 25, 2024 — The Federal Communications Commission today proposed fines against seven pirate radio operators under the Preventing Illegal Radio Abuse Through Enforcement Act (PIRATE Act) for operating six pirate radio stations. These pirate radio stations, investigated during the Enforcement Bureau’s sweep in the Boston area under the PIRATE Act, now face proposed fines totaling $857,775. From CQ Wichita Falls - The highest fine was $597,775 and the lowest was $20,000.

04-25-2024 - It's yard-mowing day at the Wichita Falls Man HQ. I haven't worked a Parks on the Air® station in a few days. Looking over the offerings on the POTA spotter website, I see a Cheesequake State Park in New Jersey is on the air. Curiosity got the best of me, so I consulted Wikipedia: The name Cheesequake has been variously described as deriving from the Lenape words Cheseh-oh-ke ("upland"), Chichequaas ("upland village"), or Chiskhakink ("at the land that has been cleared"). Has a cheeseburger been named in its honor?

04-25-2024 - Good Morning! In Archer County, a man died after falling inside a wind turbine. A Burkburnett man reported as missing was found dead in Austin. The WFPD will host K-9 detector trials this summer. I bet that will be exciting. In Clay County, a man threw suspected drugs out of his vehicle window as he was being pursued by deputies. An arrest was made, and the item was recovered. The Apache Lonestar Casino had a "soft opening" in Devol. Their website shows the address to be 250387 E 2000 RD, DEVOL, OK. How can you have a street address that big in Devol, Oklahoma? And 2000 RD? That's a lot of roads, too! Asking for a friend. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

04-24-2023 - A lone Air Force Thunderbird flew over the house today. I heard the commander was in town ahead of the rest of the crew for this weekend's show. Maybe he's still winging it alone. We had low cloud cover today, and he stayed low for my viewing pleasure. I still have an audio recording of the Thunderbird performance from seven or eight years ago, with the leader talking them through each maneuver. When they returned to town a few years later, they had changed frequencies. Maybe I'll seek them out again on my scanner radio.

04-24-2024 - From my corrections consultant - Would you believe that two Allred Unit cooks (offenders) got into a fistfight over who made the best biscuits? Yep, it happened. In my opinion, the biscuits were nothing to fight about. The cake, on the other hand, was delicious!

04-24-2024 - Good Morning! Will the Sheppard AFB Air Show scheduled for Saturday be rained out? Let's hope not. I can take it or leave it. To me, an air show is an air show is an airshow. Translation: I'm old, and I've seen a few air shows. My coffee is ready!

04-23-2024 - I made contact with KC0MYW at Madison Wetland Management District (US-0529) in South Dakota on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

04-23-2024 - From my corrections consultant - Copies From Hell - One of my "pet peeves" has always been having to work with crappy 10th-generation copies of company forms. The Allred Unit wins the prize for the crappiest copies that I've ever seen during my working life! I was working the front lobby in the main administration building on a visitation day. My job was to record the same information that the visitor had just provided in the building they were in just before reaching my building. Aren't we in the "computer age"? The forms I was asked to use consisted of horribly wavy lines that were supposed to be straight. The wording on the form had faded away in many places and was written over using a pen, and more crappy copies were made. I guess they never thought to look for a master copy of the form. The embarrassing part for me was the fact that these visitors were standing there watching me, a representative of a large and important state agency, using a form that a first-grader would probably have rejected as a scribble pad. I was so disgusted that I took the time to make new forms on my home computer and used them as new master copies. Tune in to the Allred Unit at 153.815 MHz on your scanner radio.

04-23-2024 - The Clay County Amateur Radio Club conducts a weekly Skywarn practice net on Tuesdays at 8:00 PM on the 146.800 and 146.680 MHz repeaters. Tune in with your scanner radio!

04-23-2024 - The Montague County Amateur Radio Club conducts a weekly net on Tuesdays at 7:00 PM on the club's 147.320 MHz repeater. Tune in with your scanner radio!
