04-22-2024 - Have you noticed how we have stopped connecting components and accessories to our high-tech gadgets? These days, we "hook" things together. You've probably seen and heard the phrase "hook this part to that part" or similar wordage so often that we don't notice how "last century" it is.

04-22-2024 - From my law enforcement consultant - When the 1979 tornado hit Wichita Falls, the Wichita Falls Police Department lost its radio repeater due to the power outage. Since the police vehicle radios had a simplex channel, communications were not lost entirely. Officers could communicate with each other but not with dispatch. During those days, dispatch could listen but not transmit on the simplex frequency. However, important information made its way to officers by simple relaying. In reality, officers found plenty of work to do on their own.

04-22-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 71. South wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph. Tonight: Clear, with a low around 54. South wind 11 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 23 mph.

04-22-2024 - Good Morning! We have two school Amateur (ham) Radio contacts with the International Space Station today. One is at 11:10 AM and the other at 12:42 PM. Tune in at 145.800 MHz on your scanner. With an altitude of 250 miles, the "radio footprint" of the ISS is quite large. And now, my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready. I'll have a cup while I immerse myself in some old-school Morse code on the 40-meter band and plan today's activities.

04-21-2024 - At 8:00 PM the 20-meter band is a little weak. There are several Parks on the Air® stations active but with very weak signals. I'll have to settle for the two I worked earlier today. But wait! A station in Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness Area in Arizona came booming in, but he was booming in for everyone because there was quite a pile-up. After about 10 tries he got the first letter of my call and sent a question mark. I responded with the complete call sign but just as I pounded out the last letter, my cheap key fell apart. So, he got what looked like a complete call sign but it was one letter short. He gave me a signal report but I was unable to answer with my complete call sign and his signal report. So, no contact that I can log. Maybe next time.

04-21-2024 - I made contact with KG6T at Tombstone Courthouse State Historical Park (US-10518) in Arizona on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

04-21-2024 - I'll listen to the CB Radio for a while. It sounds like the usual DX channels are going strong at 7:30 AM. Channel 19 is amazingly quiet. Usually, the DXers are tearing that one up, too. It's early, and that band has yet to fully come alive. Before long, Channel 19 will be "DX Land" and the truckers will have no effective "work" channel.

04-21-2024 - I made contact with NV4H at Fred C. Babcock/Cecil M. Webb Wildlife Management Area (US-6291) in Florida on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

04-21-2024 - The building housing Locke Electrical Supply at Loop 11 (the loop that doesn't loop) and Seymour Hwy was once a Brookshires supermarket. Before that, it was a Safeway or some similar chain grocery. Somewhere during the life of one of those stores, an employee wrote "holopeno" on a sign listing the ingredients of a new deli item. That might be a felony in Texas. I think re-assignment to janitorial duties, at a minimum, would have been justified.

04-21-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: A 20 percent chance of showers before 7am. Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 64. North northeast wind 6 to 11 mph. Tonight: Clear, with a low around 42. Northeast wind around 6 mph becoming light and variable after midnight.

04-21-2024 - Good Morning! I slept in until the late hour of 6:20 AM. Unheard of! The South Dakota Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® contact yesterday was a state I needed for my "work a park in all states" effort. I have 11 more to go. I want to do it all on CW (Morse code) and the 20-meter band. My coffee is ready so I'll pour a cup and plan the day's activities.

04-20-2024 - I made contact with KC0MYW at Lake Louise State Recreation Area (US-8170) in South Dakota on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

04-20-2024 - I made contact with KT7RC at San Pedro Riparian BLM National Conservation Area (US-10514) in Arizona on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.
