04-01-2024 - The local Amateur (ham) Radio Skywarn® storm spotter group - WX5SPS - is putting out a weather update on the storm spotter repeater at 146.940 MHz. Storms - but no tornadic activity - is expected this afternoon. There will be another update at 12:30 PM. Tune in with your scanner radio.
04-01-2024 - I'm told that the parking lot at the south end of Lake Wichita Park, the lot nearest Mount Murphy, is now open. This means I don't have to walk across half the park to get to Mount Murphy should I want to make another climb to its towering 80-foot peak to make a few 2-meter FM contacts!
04-01-2024 - All the usual suspects are up and running this morning - Walmart (154.570 MHz), Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), the County Jail (155.520 MHz), State Hospital (154.800 MHz) city transit buses (453.5375 MHz), and the BNSF Railroad (160.920 MHz) are active! Tune in with your scanner radio. School is still out for Easter so no school buses (152.360 MHz) or school handheld radios (151.940 MHz) today.
04-01-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: A chance of showers and thunderstorms between 4pm and 5pm, then showers likely and possibly a thunderstorm after 5pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Cloudy, with a high near 82. South southwest wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms. Tonight: A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms before 9pm. Some of the storms could be severe. Partly cloudy, with a low around 49. South southwest wind 9 to 17 mph becoming west in the evening. Winds could gust as high as 26 mph.
04-01-2024 - Good Morning! It's the first day of April already. Summer heat is just around the corner. Hopefully, there won't be enough heat to require electrical power "rolling blackouts" as has happened before. Just in case, make sure you have a generator on standby. I can't tell how much peace of mind I have knowing my Briggs & Stratton unit is ready to go if needed. What else is standing by? My Folgers Black Silk coffee. I think I'll pour a cup!
03-31-2024 - At 8:45 PM, I heard a short transmission on 146.430 MHz FM talking about a simplex net starting shortly. Will that be 9:00 PM? I didn't get a call sign or location. That's the first time I've heard anything on that frequency. I'll stay tuned to see what develops. UPDATE: The only station I heard was the Net Control Station, but I got enough information to determine that this net is in Mustang, Oklahoma. From what I could tell, there was no "round table" discussion, only stations checking in.
03-31-2024 - There is a lot of experimenting planned by Amateur (ham) Radio operators and groups to determine what effect the total eclipse will have on radio wave propagation. I'm glad someone has taken the responsibility to do this so I can sit back, relax, and enjoy the eclipse.

03-31-2024 - AT&T says a data breach has impacted 73 million account holders. This is getting to be a regular occurrence with these big corporations. I'm as "locked down" as I can be, so I'll worry about something else. I'll deal with stuff as it happens if it happens.
03-31-2024 - I was thinking about snagging a Parks on the Air® station this afternoon, just before the NASCAR race, but the hunters and the hunted seem to want to tell their life story on each contact. Okay, I'm exaggerating, but not by much. Back to the race.
03-31-2024 - What happened to the County Hunters Net? (A net for those Amateur (ham) Radio operators wanting to make contact with a station in every county - over 3,000 - in the USA.) Did it fizzle out? As far as I can tell, the net, or nets, have been replaced by a county spotter website. I never got involved in County Hunting but I used to listen occasionally. I'll always remember those 2x2 signal reports when conditions were bad: "Two Two - Rifle Shot - Bang Bang!"
03-31-2024 - The Wichita Amateur Radio Society holds a weekly informal net on Sundays at 8:00 PM on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. All licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operators are invited to check in. Scanner radio enthusiasts are also invited to listen in.

03-31-2024 - At 7:30 AM, the CB Radio band is quickly coming alive. I usually use Channel 6, the "superbowl" of CB Radio, as a first indicator of band conditions. Channel 6 is alive, and Channel 38 LSB (Lower Sideband) is up and running. Someone on Channel 11 is ghost-talking (talking to himself). Maybe I'll give the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program a rest today and play on the CB Radio, spreading my 4 watts around the globe! I'll just let the haters hate.
03-31-2024 - From my corrections consultant - It was lunchtime at "7" Chow Hall. An older inmate - around 70 years old - deposited his empty tray at the proper place, walked over to me, and asked, "Boss Man, I'm old. Can I eat again?" I told him it was a nice try, but he could not eat again. I should have told him to go to his house and hit the sack, because sleep is a time machine to breakfast.
03-31-2024 - NWS Forecast - Today: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. South wind 9 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Tonight: A 20 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2am. Cloudy, then gradually becoming partly cloudy, with a low around 66. South southeast wind 8 to 14 mph, with gusts as high as 21 mph.
03-31-2024 - Good Morning! It's Sunday and the last day of March. I got the yard mowed yesterday. I put off applying a pre-emergent weed killer this year, and now I'm battling weeds. I think I'll have them under control shortly. I'm not one of those folks whose yards are all green in March because it's 100% weeds, and I don't want things to get that bad. I'm shooting for "zero weeds" before mid-April. The Texas Rangers are off to a good start. Let's see how long that lasts. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready, so I'll have a cup!
