02-01-2026 - 5:00 AM - Good Morning! It's Sunday, and it looks like the weather will improve over the next few days, with more tolerable temperatures. It's time to turn another calendar page. "Like sands through the hourglass, so are the days of our lives", to quote the opening line of the soap opera Days of Our Lives. The Farmers Market was closed yesterday due to frigid temperatures. I hope no one had to stand in line outside the J.S. Bridwell Ag Center for yesterday's Kiwanis Pancake Festival. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 5:15 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 57. West southwest wind 6 to 8 mph. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 35. Southwest wind 5 to 8 mph.

--- 5:30 AM - In the News - From Texoma's Home Page (KFDX): "Wichita Falls PD Officer Taylor Shoffit is facing a class C assault family violence charge, a criminal mischief charge, and a resisting arrest charge." Under Texas Civil Service rules, a police officer can be fired for violating department rules and regulations, an administrative matter, regardless of the outcome of any criminal procedures. We'll have to see what happens here.

--- 6:00 AM - The Wichita Amateur Radio Society holds its weekly informal net tonight at 8:00 PM on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. As far as I know, all licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operators are invited to check in. Of course, scanner radio enthusiasts can also tune in.

--- 8:00 AM - The license-free Multi-Use Radio Service frequency of 251.820 MHz is getting a workout this morning. Tune in with your scanner radio to find out what it's all about. Since most MURS traffic is from low-power handheld radios, you'll need a good (20 feet off the ground or higher) outside antenna.

--- 1:30 PM - I made a trip to United on Old Iowa Park Road to pick up a few necessary items. One such item was the Girl Scout cookies being sold outside. I got two boxes of thin mints. I didn't capitalize it because it isn't capitalized on the box. I might continue the 5-hour break-in on my new Champion generator, which I'm glad I didn't need. But winter is not over. The Great Texas Freeze hit us in the second week of February back in 2021.

--- 2:32 PM - I contacted a station at Welch Ranch BLM Recreation Management Area (US-10894) in Wyoming on 20 meters (14 MHz) CW (Morse code) in the Amateur (ham) Radio Parks on the Air® program.

01-31-2026 - 6:00 AM - Good Morning! It's Saturday, and it's cold as heck outside for the start of the annual Kiwanis Pancake Festival at the J.S. Bridwell Ag Center this morning. I have no plans for today. According to a story at Texoma’s Home Page (KFDX), many citizens were surprised that WFISD schools were closed on Friday. I was one of those many, even if it didn’t affect me. The Superintendent said he would try to make sure none of those days would be tacked on at the end of the year. Unknown if local Amateur (ham) Radio Operators will be meeting for breakfast at P-3. My Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready. UPDATE: I hear several hams conversing on the 147.140 MHz repeater on the way to that location.

--- 6:30 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Sunny, with a high near 31. North northeast wind 6 to 11 mph becoming light and variable in the afternoon. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 21. South southeast wind 3 to 6 mph.

--- 7:30 AM - I haven't had the CB Radio on all week. Checking it now reveals that nothing has changed - there are strong signals to be found all across the band. I still say we need more local groups on the radio, in addition to the one on Channel 23 every evening around 5:30 to 6:00 PM. Get a CB Radio and give me a call. No “echo”, though. My old ears complain enough as it is.

--- 12:05 PM - At the Iron Horse Pub - Corey Hunt and The Wise with special guests Sandlot Daze - Saturday January 31 - Doors 8:30 PM, Start 9:30 PM. 615 Eighth Street.
