01-26-2026 - 5:30 AM - Good Morning. It's Monday. Schools, along with many businesses and offices, are closed today due to the snow. The National Weather Service website shows that we dipped down to 6 degrees overnight, not the predicted 1 degree. At times, that prediction dipped as low as -3. I have zero plans for today, and my Folgers Black Silk coffee is ready.

--- 5:45 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Mostly cloudy through mid morning, then gradual clearing, with a high near 24. Wind chill values as low as -4. Light and variable wind becoming west southwest 5 to 7 mph in the morning. Tonight: Mostly clear, with a low around 10. Wind chill values as low as -3. South southwest wind 7 to 9 mph.

--- 7:00 AM - Instead of "over the air" Morse code, I'm listening to the G4FON Koch Method Morse Trainer on my computer, set to 25 words per minute. I'm running it in 10-minute sessions while I work on my second cup of coffee. I'll crank up the Yaesu 857D later for some Parks on the Air® action.

--- 3:00 PM - In the news - Argument over cigarettes leads to arrest, Colorado man indicted for online solicitation charges, Boy airlifted after sled accident at Lake Wichita Park, Tennessee man facing allegations of child grooming.

--- 5:00 PM - At the Iron Horse Pub - Downtown Royalty with special guests Said The People - Friday January 30 Doors 8:30 PM, Start 9:30 PM - 615 Ohio.

--- 6:00 PM - The Local Group is active on CB Radio Channel 23 this evening. Tune in or join in. We need a few more such groups on the CB Radio. After all, it's the only form of license-free, long-distance communications that requires no infrastructure. You don't need anyone's permission or approval to communicate "off the grid."

01-25-2026 - Good Morning! It's Sunday, and the temperature outside is 8 degrees. This time tomorrow, the forecast is about 1 degree. Then, maybe we can start to slowly climb out of this frozen Hell. I see we have more snow on the ground this morning than we had last night. I have nothing on the schedule today other than watching the last two NFL playoff games. Hopefully, the Texas power grid will cooperate. I have a generator, but that won't help the playoffs if the TV stations go down. I hope they have generators, too! My coffee is ready, and there's soothing Morse code on the 40-meter Amateur (ham) Radio band.

--- 5:30 AM - NWS Forecast - Today: Snow showers likely, mainly before 9am. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17. Wind chill values as low as -8. North northwest wind 10 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Tonight: Increasing clouds, with a low around 1. Wind chill values as low as -6. North northwest wind 5 to 9 mph.

--- 6:00 AM - Some local weekend radio scanning targets: Walmart (154.570 MHz), Allred Unit (153.815 MHz), Wichita County Jail (155.520 MHz), State Hospital (154.800 MHz) city transit buses (453.5375 MHz), Wichita Valley Airport (122.800 MHz), Kickapoo Airport (122.700 MHz), Wichita Falls Regional Airports / SAFB (119.750 & 122.950 MHz), and the BNSF Railroad (160.920 MHz). MORE!

--- 6:30 AM - The Wichita Amateur Radio Society holds its weekly informal net tonight at 8:00 PM on the club's 147.140 MHz repeater. As far as I know, all licensed Amateur (ham) Radio operators are invited to check in. Of course, scanner radio enthusiasts can also tune in.

--- 5:30 PM - At the KFDX website, there is a long list of school, and other closings for Monday. I have a doctor's appointment on Monday afternoon, but they’re not on the list. I guess I’ll just leave the house earlier than usual. That's if they don't call. With a low tonight of 1 degree, that snow should be nice and crispy. No school bus antics to enjoy at 52.360 MHz on the scanner radio. No City transit bus chatter on 453.5375 MHz, either. UPDATE: The doctor's office emailed me to say it will be closed tomorrow and that they will call me to reschedule.
